According to a new ranking by Buildworld, six of the 10 ugliest buildings in the world are located in the United States.

The building of J. Edgar Hoover, located in Washington, D.C., ranked second among the best eyes in the world, and Boston Hall in Massachusetts ranked third.

The list is based on the language people use to describe buildings on Twitter. The researchers compiled a list of the buildings most often cited as the ugliest, then searched for the buildings along with keywords on Twitter. They used a sentiment analysis tool to analyze what percentage of tweets expressed negative feelings about each building’s design.

The Scottish Parliament building in Edinburgh, Scotland is considered the ugliest building in the world according to Twitter users.

The Verizon Building on Pearl Street in New York was ranked sixth, while the Watergate Complex in Washington, D.C., Denver International Airport in Colorado, and Trump Tower in Las Vegas rounded out the 8th, 9th, and 10th spots, respectively.

Users felt that the Ryugyong Hotel in Pyongyang, North Korea is the ugliest building outside of the United States and the United Kingdom.

The J. Edgar Hoover Building serves as the headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and was the most expensive US government building when completed. Construction began in the early 1960s and was completed in 1977.

According to Buildworld, the building is criticized in about 40 percent of the tweets that mention it.

Boston City Hall is criticized in about a quarter of tweets, while the Verizon Building is criticized in 20 percent of tweets.

Some buildings have also received criticism for their appearance outside of Twitter. A 2018 Architectural Digest article described Trump Tower in Las Vegas as “even in a city full of over-the-top architecture.”

When it comes to the ugliest buildings in the United States, other eyes outside of the top 10 stadiums in the U.S. include Minneapolis, Minneapolis, Thompson Center in Chicago, IL. The Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas and the Florida State Capitol in Tallahassee.

The data for the ratings was collected in October 2022.
