Selena Gomez is a longtime member of Taylor Swift’s star-studded friend group, but Gomez has said that Swift is her “only friend” in the entertainment industry.
Gomez talked about her life in the entertainment industry with Rolling Stone’s Alex Morris in an interview published Thursday. The singer’s new documentary, “Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me,” which chronicles her mental health journey since 2016, was also released on Friday.
Gomez told Rolling Stone that she struggles to find her voice and appeal to fans as she gets older. The former Disney star also shared that she didn’t have many famous friends she could talk to about her struggles.
“I never really fit in with a great group of girls who were celebrities. The only friend I really have in the industry is Taylor. [Swift], so I remember feeling like I didn’t belong. I felt the presence of everyone around me living a full life. I had that position, and I was really happy, but … was I? Do these material things make me happy?” she said, adding, “I didn’t like who I was because I didn’t know who I was.”
Swift and Gomez met in 2005. Gomez told KIIS FM UK in 2017 that the two were members of The Jonas Brothers at the time and “just clicked.”
The friends have praised each other in recent weeks. Gomez shared on her new SiriusXM radio channel on Thursday that Swift is “the most influential artist to me,” according to Billboard.
“Not because she’s my friend, but she’s been an artist who can transition into so many different genres and she can do it without breaking a sweat and I admire that so much.” And that’s very rare,” he said. “I love his act and I just admire everything he’s done. He’s definitely inspired me.”
Swift, who released her 10th studio album “Midnights” on Oct. 21, also showed her support for Gomez and her new film. In an Instagram story posted Friday, the singer shared the trailer for “My Mind and Me” and a sweet note for the “Only Murders in the Building” actress.
“Proud of you @selenagomez,” she wrote. “love you forever.”
