Next stop: Indiana Jones 5, where she plays the lead role in Harrison Ford’s final fedora-top out. In Andy’s 1969-set adventure, she steps into the fray as Helena — none other than Henry Jones Jr.’s godmother.
“She’s a mystery and a surprise,” Waller-Bridge says Empire, undermining his largely down-to-earth character. In fact, there are plenty of adjectives to be found when describing Helena. According to incoming director James Mangold, she is “bloated, charming, girl-next-door, a grocer”. According to Harrison Ford himself, she is “a pioneer in ethical accounting”. And for the actor, it all came from a conversation with legendary producer Kathleen Kennedy. “Kathy was in London and asked to have dinner with me, and casually mentioned her,” recalls Waller-Bridge. “I immediately ordered ten bottles of wine. So that was the fastest script I’ve ever read; I then came out of a kind of fog. I just couldn’t believe how much fun I had and how moved I was by it. And then I zoomed in and yelled, ‘Yes!’ on all of them.”
For Mangold, a key reference point for Waller-Bridge in bringing Helena to life was Barbara Stanwyck’s role in the 1941 screwball comedy Lady Eve (“I’m like, ‘Yeah, sure, I’ll just do my Barbara Stanwyck,'” laughs Waller to Bridge. “It’s an impossible task.”) But amid all the fun and comedy came the chance to jump. . The kind of big action set pieces that the Indiana Jones movies do best. “Honestly, I just love it,” she says. “When you’re playing a character who throws herself on the back of a car, there’s no acting around it. You just have to do it. The mystery and wonder of Helena is going to be revealed.
