Maryland, Massachusetts Inch on Mobile Sports Betting Law

Maryland gaming officials approached the state last week about legalizing sports betting in early December.

Now in Massachusetts, officials have agreed to a plan to begin online sports betting in January and mobile betting in March.

These states may become two of the next to allow the use of mobile devices for legal sports betting.

In Maryland, voters approved sports betting in 2020, which followed nearly a year after sports betting began at casino sportsbooks.

Since then, critics have expressed frustration at the lengthy process to start mobile dating in Maryland.

The pace was determined by the state’s efforts to include small businesses and women’s businesses that are not represented in the sports-related industry.

Now, after a push from Republican Governor Larry Hogan, mobile sports betting appears to be on the horizon.

On Friday, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission determined that 10 online sports betting operators are eligible for licenses.

At its next meeting on November 21, the commission is expected to vote on final approval for these qualified drivers. The launch of the mobile game can be started two weeks after the approval, in the first days of December, if not earlier.

In other words, the sports game will start in time for the NFL playoffs and Super Bowl. This season’s Super Bowl is scheduled for Feb. 12, 2023, in Glendale Arizona. Every week, the NFL games are the most important sporting events in the county.

  • Frederick Long Shots
  • Boat on the Potomac

  • Bingo World Brooklyn Park
  • Maryland State Fairgrounds

The above applicants are awaiting approval at the November commission meeting.

At the moment, 10 mobile sports driver applications have been approved. These devices “generally cooperate with licensees, providing technology and violence” and do not require a license. from the commission at the November meeting, according to the Daily Record. These tools are:

  • BetFair
  • BetFred
  • BetMGM
  • A few years old
  • The scoffers
  • Parx Interactive
  • Barstool Sports Book
  • PointsBet
  • BetRivers

Massachusetts is on target for the 2023 campaign

Also this week, gambling regulators in Massachusetts rejected a request from DraftKings to start betting in-person and sports betting on the same day.

The Boston-based online sportsbook is arguing that the suspension gives the first-timers an unfair competitive advantage.

On Thursday, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission took the DraftKings’ request under consideration but stuck with the staggered initial approval in the 4-0 vote.

Under that plan, betting will begin in January 2023 at casino sportsbooks, followed by the start of betting in early March.

The goal of this schedule is to provide sports games at brick-and-mortar sportsbooks in time for the Super Bowl, with mobile betting starting before the NCAA March Madness men’s basketball tournament in March. 14 to April 3.

At the October meeting, the commission heard from employees who expressed concern that starting sports betting so close to the Super Bowl could create a public hazard during the show. Many people like to bet on casinos.
