Kevin McCarthy has lost the sixth vote in a call for speaker, as the chamber is suspended
The House of Representatives adjourned Wednesday evening without deciding on a new speaker, as lawmakers appeared for a while to be unsure of the final vote.
The decision means that Kevin McCarthy continues to face an uphill battle to get enough votes to become the next speaker of the House. McCarthy must secure a majority of votes from members to be elected speaker after Republicans take control of the lower chamber in mid-November.
“I don’t think tonight’s vote is good,” McCarthy told reporters at the Capitol on Wednesday, following six unsuccessful votes for the Speaker over the past two days. “Let the people work a little.”
As frustrated lawmakers gathered and gathered in small meetings, Rep. Matt Gaetz told reporters that this would not end with McCarthy as speaker.

McCarthy has delayed the next vote until Thursday after six embarrassing defeats in the Speaker’s bid
House lawmakers voted to adjourn for a second day on Wednesday evening without electing a speaker in a historic defeat for Republican leader Kevin McCarthy and a sign of the lack of unity that has taken their part.
The court adjourned for several hours after three votes were held throughout the afternoon and each failed to elect a speaker. McCarthy’s Conservative opponents showed no sign of backing down in their attempts to block his election to office, while at the same time there was little evidence of consensus on either side.
The allies of the lesser leader continued their attacks against their allies, but it seems that they were not close to defeating any of them. The House narrowly voted to adjourn until noon Thursday, though it is unclear whether McCarthy will advance to the 218 votes needed to secure the floor.
If he takes the role of speaker of the house, his position will remain marred by an impressive six defeats in the House of Commons – no leader of the party in control of the House has lost the first speaker election in more than 100 years.
