Hill Country Vet – Dr. Patterson founded Hilo Country Animal Hospital in May 1999 with the goal of bringing a state-of-the-art, full-service animal hospital to Hilo and Northwest San Antonio. “I am very proud of Hill Country’s amazing team of doctors and staff, as well as the wonderful customers who allow us to provide the best care for their pets.”
Dr. Patterson graduated from Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine and earned his doctorate of veterinary medicine in 1992. He began his career as a veterinarian in emergency medicine and says a high level of medical care helped him develop the level of care he always wanted. Prepare for your patients. When asked what he enjoys most about working as a veterinarian, Dr. Patterson replies, “I enjoy the variety of veterinarians, the relationships we build with our clients, and I enjoy practicing veterinary medicine. My work every day. It’s different and exciting.”

Dr. Patterson is a longtime member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Texas Veterinary Medical Association and the American Animal Hospital Association. He and his wife Kelly have two children and provide a home for four dogs, two cats and a rescued goat.

As a young lady, Dr. Amanda Doty participated in 4H from age 8 to 18. Later, she realized she wanted to be in the animal profession. Dr. Doughty grew up in the San Antonio area, attending and playing softball for Saint Mary’s University her freshman year. He then went to Texas A&M University where he earned a degree in Biology. Finally, in 2015, he graduated from the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Doughty interned at Odessa Hospital before joining Hill Country Animal Hospital in July 2018. Dr. Doughty’s professional interests include: Dota include animal nutrition and dentistry.
Dr. Dottie shares her home with her husband Reid and dog Laramie, a black lab and border collie mix. Dr. Dota’s hobbies are working, reading and traveling.
Associate of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Mary Lovell graduated from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine. She then spent 8 years in the US Army treating military working dogs and pets of military members. In addition to working at Hill Country Animal Hospital, he also serves in the United States Army Reserves.

The main interests of Dr. Lovell’s veterinary specialties include canine and feline stress-free management, dermatology, behavior and internal medicine.
Dr. Lovell shares her home with her husband, 2 stepchildren, and 2 stepchildren. She met her husband, Willa, in school at A&M. His name is Aggie Computer Engineer. Together they are the parents of 4-year-old Audrey and 1-year-old Archer.
Assistant Veterinarian Dr. Stephanie Crick grew up with Vizslas, a sporting breed known for being loyal companions, and learned from an early age that pets play an important role in one’s happiness and well-being. She grew up near Reading, Pennsylvania and worked for several years as a veterinary receptionist and veterinary technician before attending veterinary school.
Dr. Crick received his BA in Biology from Christ College of Pennsylvania in 2002, where he was a member of the College Honors Program. He then attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and received his VMD in 2007. Dr. Crick practiced in Pennsylvania for five years before moving to Texas. Today, he enjoys the unique challenges of soft tissue surgery and feline medicine. He is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
Gillespie Veterinary Center
Dr. Crick says the most rewarding thing about her career is “helping my clients be happy while keeping their four-legged family members healthy.” She shares the challenges of diagnosing and treating her patients and enjoys the rewards.
Dr. Crick is married to a veterinarian and has a daughter. They share their home with Nash, Brittany, a vet, a rescued San Antonio hybrid, and four cats: Lucy, Jenga, Avril, and Hopkins. He enjoys stationary cycling, yoga and spending time with his family.
In April 2016, Associate Veterinarian Anna Macias joined the Hill Country Animal Hospital team. Dr. Macias is originally from Texas and grew up around his family’s cattle ranch. “When our vet called the farm to deliver the calf, I knew this was what I wanted to raise,” he says. Dr. Macias values diversity in his work. “Every day is different in different ways.”
Dr. Macias attended and graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in Biomedical Sciences. He attended Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine, earning a doctorate in veterinary medicine. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and her professional interests include internal medicine and prevention.

Dr. Macias and her husband Matt share their home with two children and two greyhounds, Pickle and Gracie Lou. When not working, he enjoys doing crafts and spending time with his family.
Claudia Long Funari is director of finance and benefits at Hill Country Animal Hospital. Claudia brings to our practice her passion for numbers and QuickBooks skills as well as years of experience in finance and accounting.
Claudia has many years of accounting experience, but Hill Country Animal Hospital is her first job with animals outside of volunteering at an Air Force vet clinic when she was in high school. Claudia “She loves working with the staff here. Everyone is great. Dr. Patterson is a great owner and of course I love all dogs and cats.
Claudia shares the house with her husband and three children. Baron, Rottweiler and two Labrador / Husky mixes named Pongo and Bee. Claudia and her husband have 5 older children and 3 older children.
Country Animal Clinic
Lisa Christie joined Hill Country Animal Hospital in May 2007 after working in animal and veterinary medicine since 1991. In addition to her many years of experience, she holds a BA in Social Science with a Minor in Criminal Justice.
“My favorite thing about our hospital is the level of service we provide to our clients and the level of care and attention we provide to our patients,” he says. “I’m proud that we go out of our way to do everything we can to help our customers when the opportunity presents itself. It says a lot that we consider many of our customers to be members of our extended hospital family and that we truly care about them.
Lisa is a member of the American Animal Hospital Association, the Association of Veterinary Hospital Administrators and the American Association of Feline Physicians. He is also interested in cat behavior and stress management. Her rescue family includes a collie mix named Frankie, an Australian collie mix named Daphne, and cats George, Rocky, Vinny, Taylor and Charlotte. Lisa is an avid reader and enjoys cooking, gardening, shopping and spending time with her husband.
Marlena joined the Hill Country Animal Hospital team in May 2021. She is a rock star customer relations specialist. This is Marlena’s first job at an animal hospital, but she has experience working at an animal shelter for several years.

Marlena has a bachelor’s degree in nursing and is working toward a degree in health care administration. Marlena describes the best part of her job at Hill Country Animal Hospital as “seeing all the animals, especially boxers and schnauzers.”
As you can surely guess from this comment, Marlena has 5 dogs at home. She and her family have Milo, a 2-year-old boxer, Mack, a 3-year-old boxer and pit bull mix, Smokey, a 4-year-old schnauzer, Harley, a 7-year-old schnauzer, and Snoopy, a 13-year-old dachshund mix.
Marlena enjoys working at Hill Country Animal Hospital because she sees how many animals and families we help! When Marlena isn’t busy with housework, she enjoys spending time with her family and dogs or volunteering at the Texas Diaper Bank.
Tessa is from Colorado who has settled into our area and has become our valued customer relations specialist. Tessa loves meeting all the animals that come and interacting with them and their owners. Tessa is an animal lover who, in addition to dogs, has horses, parrots, parakeets, ducks, geese, snakes, frogs, peacocks and pheasants at home.

Tessa has worked at 2 other Colorado veterinary hospitals and believes she brings creative ideas to our hospital. He loves a team environment where “everyone is ready to help each other.”
In her spare time, Tessa competes with her horses in team storage and sorting, and enjoys country dancing. Tessa is very artistic and likes to make decorative glasses. Look around next time you’re in the hospital and you’ll probably see her handiwork as we all have tumblrs from her!
