North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the launch of a “new type” of intercontinental ballistic missiles on Friday, accompanied by his daughter, whose presence has not previously been confirmed.

Dramatic images released by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) appear to show Kim holding hands with the girl, while an ICBM sits on its mobile launch platform nearby.

KCNA said the “new” missile the two were seeing was a Hwasong-17, and said it had come from Pyongyang International Airfield, flying a distance of 999.2 kilometers (621 miles).

Japan warned after Friday’s launch that the new missile appeared to have the ability to reach the surface of the United States.

Kim said the test was intended to “clearly demonstrate” his country’s ability to respond to what he called “brutal attacks by enemies who want to destroy peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula,” according to a KCNA report.

“Kim Jong Un announced that if the enemy continues to threaten the DPRK, often launching nuclear weapons destruction methods, our party and government will take action against nuclear weapons and complete confrontation,” KCNA said.

Friday’s missile, which landed 210 kilometers (130 miles) west of the Japanese island of Oshima, according to Japanese officials, was not the first time North Korea had launched an ICBM that experts and officials have deemed capable of reaching the US.

Friday’s missile was shorter and shorter than Pyongyang’s March 24 missile test, which recorded the longest range and longest duration of any missile North Korea has ever tested, according to a report from the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) at the time. The spacecraft reached an altitude of 6,248.5 kilometers (3,905 miles) and flew 1,090 kilometers (681 miles), KCNA said.

And in 2017, US Defense Secretary James Mattis said the missile launched by North Korea that year showed the ability to hit “anything in the world.”

Although the missiles have different specifications, Pyongyang’s ability to land a nuclear warhead on its surface and deliver it to a target remains uncertain.

Ballistic missiles are launched into space before falling back to Earth. Experts have yet to see conclusive evidence that North Korea can get a warhead to return to Earth’s atmosphere.

Kim’s threats to the US and South Korea were not unusual.

After a missile test in October, North Korea’s leader warned his adversaries that his nuclear arsenal was ready for “real war.”

“Our nuclear armed forces … reaffirmed their full readiness for real war to bring the enemy into their hands,” Kim said in a KCNA report.

Very little is known about the private life of Kim Jong Un or his family.

Saturday’s news report did not mention Kim’s daughter, who was making her first public appearance in state media. But in 2013, former basketball star Dennis Rodman told the British newspaper The Guardian that Kim had a “child” named “Ju Ae.”

Rodman said he spent time with the couple, describing Kim as a “good father” and also spoke with Kim’s wife, Ri Sol Ju.

“I held their son Ju Ae and talked to Mrs. Ri again,” he told the newspaper.

Speculation began in 2012 that Ri might be pregnant after a photo taken by state media showed her wearing a long shirt that would have hidden her. But North Korean officials have not commented on the matter.

State media did not announce Kim and Ri’s wedding until July 2012, three years after South Korean intelligence experts believed the wedding had taken place.

But this changed in 2018, when she was given the new title of “Honorable Lady” by the North Korean press, dropping from the previously used “comrade” and a sign, according to experts, that she is finding her personality. religion.

Kim and Ri have three children together, according to South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS).

North Korea has been ruled as a dictator since its founding in 1948 by Kim Il Sung. His son, Kim Jong Il, took over after his father’s death in 1994. And Kim Jong Un took power 17 years after Kim Jong Il died.
