14 people shot, including 3 children, in East Garfield Park. ‘It’s over by three seconds.’

Fourteen people were shot, including three children, in a drive-by shooting in East Garfield Park Monday night, one of Chicago’s deadliest shootings in recent years.

The children are 3, 11 and 13 years old, Police Supt. David Brown told reporters. All three were in critical condition. Some of the victims were between the ages of 31 and 56, police said.

The shooting happened around 9 a.m. as people gathered in the 2700 block of West Flournoy Street for a Halloween party, police said. It was not clear who the security guard was, but balloons were being released as costumed people walked down the block.

“It’s been three seconds,” Brown said outside Stroger Hospital, where most of the injured were taken. “The car is pulling out after passing and randomly firing into the crowd.

“We don’t have any motive,” he said, adding that police believe there were two shooters.

“We’re always concerned about retaliation obviously, but we don’t know enough about it, whether it’s related to gang violence or personal conflicts, but as soon as we know we’ll share it with the public,” Brown said. “And obviously we’re deploying extra police in the area to make sure we can prevent retaliation if it’s real.”

Both victims were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from critical to non-life-threatening, police said. A 37-year-old man and a 48-year-old man are in critical condition, police said.

A woman was hit by a car as she tried to flee the shooting, police said. He was fine with the wounds on his body. No one was in prison.

Brown said the shooting was captured on surveillance video, which investigators are reviewing. Police are also waiting for the victims to complete treatment before questioning them.

The shooting is the deadliest attack in Chicago in less than two years. Fifteen people were shot, two fatally, in Greater Grand Crossing in March 2021. Fifteen people were also shot in July 2020 outside a funeral home in Gresham.

When asked about the number of people shot, Brown urged the media to “not get fat right now.”

“Right now, people are inside receiving treatment, some may be fighting for their lives,” he said. “Let’s do this right now very quickly, we’re trying to find the culprit.”

A reward of up to $15,000 is being offered for information leading to charges or convictions. Anyone with information was asked to submit tips to cpdtip.com.
